Mental Detoxification…Does it Matter?

According to Gary Null, PhD, “We live in a society that always wants more. but with ‘more’ we get more tension, more fear, more disease.” We must not only detoxify our bodies, but our minds. We must detoxify our minds by making our lives more simple…clean out the ‘dead wood’.
Stress is the number one cause of aging and a leading cause of numerous diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and strokes. The question remains…how can we lower our stress levels? Is there a simple answer? Americans are known to be some of the unhappiest people in the world. We have become so caught up in our own minutia that we have completely lost sight of what is important…living healthy and happy.

When you want to detoxify your mind, your first step is to reduce the level of information overload that nearly all of us experience on a daily basis. This means giving yourself a day where you do not listen to the news, go online, or be involved in your daily business activities. We get overwhelmed by information on a daily basis and need that cooling off period for our brains to rest.

After you have taken some time to cool your brain from sensory overload, start by doing some form of mind relaxation technique. Yoga and meditation is really good for this. Then get involved in some sort of outdoor activities such as hiking, cross-country skiing, or walking on the beach. Any type of brisk exercise that stimulates the cardiovascular system while breathing fresh air has a very healing, soothing effect on the mind.

One thing to bear in mind…during your day of mental detox, push all the negative energy out. Only focus on positive things or activities that will bring you positive energy, thoughts, and peace.

I am going to give you a few “exercises” and ideas to ponder. These are things that work for me…they bring me peace and happiness…

1.] On your detoxification day, take a couple of hours and work in a charity. I have found that helping those who are less fortunate makes me realize that any stress I am experiencing is usually quite miniscule compared to the problems many other people are experiencing.

2.] Realize that you cannot change others…you can only change yourself.

3.] Begin to write in a journal. Start by writing down on paper what frustrates you the most. Write down what you fear the most. When you can confront your frustrations and fears…you can deal with them and they will not control you.

4.] Write down everything that comes to mind as a negative in your life. Plan your goals for the next 12 months that you will turn those negatives into positives.

Are you ready to detoxify? Are you ready to Empower your mind and body by clearing out the ‘dead wood’? In my next post we will continue this journey into clearing out more ‘dead wood’.

To Me, Mental Detox. is totally, and I mean totally, unplugging from most all news sources (CNN.com, etc..) that would work to drain your motivation and emotion and rob you of your “Why” for that day! Replace that with a photo of a family portrait and keep that in front of you to remind yourself that they are your “Why”! In 2004, when Jim Rohn and Chris Widener, in CA, told me to do so, I did and my life has never been the same. I don’t have a remote clue as to what’s going on out there (in the news), but my businesses and family are flourishing and that’s what matters most to me. It’s all in your focus!

Bill…You just gave me some incredible insight. I, along with you in your former days, and the majority of others in our world are almost “freeze-framed” by the media and what is going on. Yes current events are important, but we need to tune that out and tune in to our personal and family needs first. If that means keeping the tv off…so be it. Great comments…thanks so much! We all need to practice mental detox once a week if possible…make it happen!
