Facebook, Linked-In, Digg, Twitter, MySpace…OK so YOU have decided to use social media to promote YOUR business. Great idea…now what?? You need to know some basics to help insure that the world out there takes you seriously. Here are a few key points to help you get started on the right path;
Make a practice of keeping your online profile professional, but interesting. A good tip for “newbies” is to find a couple of experts in the industry and pattern your style after them. Why re-invent the wheel? One great example is one of my mentors, Liz Southall of DotComDiva. Her expertise is in Facebook marketing. She keeps her profile simple, elegant, yet intriguing.
Balance your contact lists. It seems very simple, but so often I have seen internet marketers allow their list(s) to control them rather than controlling their list-building techniques. Use your existing contact lists to balance out and connect with people across multiple platforms such as; Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. This is a subtle way to introduce professional contacts to your own creative or entrepreneurial pursuits.
Do the obvious. Find people you know. Use the connection tools on each platform, such as “suggested people” to follow on Twitter, “People You May Know” on Facebook or email contact(s) searches to cross over and connect on multiple levels.
Another great way to promote yourself is to add your social media contact information to your email signature using easy apps such as WiseStamp. Wisestamp is very cool, because you can integrate the latest updates from your Twitter, Blog, Facebook, Linked-In, etc… and see them on your email signature. A great tool to let your email contacts connect with your social media avenues. If your Twitter handle is risqué or unprofessional for example; @hotsinglelaydee123, you might consider leaving it off your signature(s). Better yet…develop a more sophisticated handle. Be professional…leave no doubt as to your intentions. Your first impressions in the internet world might even be more important than in the real world, because it is more challenging for potential friends and customers to develop a trusting relationship without face time.
