With the social media explosion, many of us have gotten wrapped up in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. We spend an average of 10 percent each day on Facebook. We have discovered the power of a 140-character message through Twitter. We have discovered the importance of being live on the Internet with YouTube.
I found that as I became immersed in these new and powerfully effective social media venues that I had forgotten the basics. I forgot that many individuals still are not on Facebook. Many do not know what Twitter is…and many others do not even know how to navigate YouTube, let alone understand how powerful it really can become for them socially as well as a professionally.
One day I was sharing with one of my friends on the phone about how cool Twitter was and what you can do with it…how many people you can reach through the power of Twitter. I was really on a roll. Suddenly he interrupted me and said, ”What is Twitter”? He went on to tell me how he had challenges with Facebook and had never heard of Twitter.
Needless to say, this was an eye opener and a reality check. I realized that if I continued on the path
that I was
headed that I would lose many connections. I realized that I needed to get back to the basics…the basics of email marketing. This did not mean that I needed to stop Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. It meant that I needed to keep things in perspective. I needed to realize that many individuals are still intimidated and challenged by more advanced venues of communication.
I knew that video was a much more effective means of staying in touch and that it gave a more human element to communication than plain text, so I decided to incorporate video into my email…something to give the reader the “feeling of being right in the room in front of me”. The response has been overwhelmingly great. Friends and connections love the “personal touch” that a video brings to the table. It really creates that “Wow Effect”.
If you are not feeling effective in your marketing campaigns maybe you need to empower your business by evaluating the tools you are using…are they connecting with your target market? Maybe it is time to get back to basics…get back to email and while you are doing it, bring the personal touch of video into your message and enjoy the response. Empower your life.
