We all know that link building can be a very tricky business, but are there simple strategies that pay back dividends? If so, what are those strategies?  What is the best way to generate valuable links?  Authoring articles for popular online publications is your best bet.  When done correctly, being a guest author can supercharge your site’s ranking.

Here’s what you need to know to get that exclusive invitation to be a “guest” author:

  • There’s no shortcut to becoming an online author superstar.  Popular online publications become popular because their authors produce high-quality content.  Any content that you submit must meet or exceed that level of expertise and execution.  It is not about impressing the audience that you’re targeting.  You must realize that every guest article you author represents your brand to his or her audience.
  • Build an authentic relationship before promoting yourself.  Initiate conversations on social sites.  Leave comments at their blog.  These are just a couple of ideas that will help you get to know them on a personal level.  Let them get to know you. In other words: Don’t have the desert before you’ve had the main course.
  • Don’t take rejection personally.  Publishers turn down guest articles for numerous reasons, many of which have nothing to do with you or the quality of your writing.  He or she might already have a plan to cover a similar topic in the near future; or perhaps the tone of your post doesn’t quite fit his brand.
  • Provide evidence for your claims. Unless you’re a leading expert on trends in your unique industry, you’ve got to back up your statements with links to data.

    I couldn’t agree with you more Martin.

    Get out there, meet some other bloggers, share their content and they’ll definitely start inviting you to write for them. That’s exactly how I started guest blogging although I still don’t do a lot of it. It’s very time consuming and I much prefer to put all my good stuff on my own blog but when you are just starting out it’s a great way to get in front of a whole lot of people you’d never have the opportunity otherwise.

    Great advice Martin! We must first build a relationship…that is so important. I like guest bloggers and I’ve been a guest on many myself. It does boost our traffic and followers. One of my pet peeves is the many emails or FB Messages I get from people who have never come to my blog, nor do I know that ask me to be a guest on my blog. Grrrr
